The beginner guide to juice cleansing

If you’re feeling lethargic and unable to go on, or simply exhausted and burnt out, it may be your body’s way of telling you that it needs some tender loving care. If you’ve been short on time and existing on a diet of fast food and take-away meals, you’ve probably been overloading your body with fat, sugar and sodium and starving it of the vitamins and minerals it so badly needs to keep going.

A build-up of toxins in your system can lead to all sorts of nasty symptoms, so give yourself a break and consider a juice cleanse. Juice cleansing is an all-natural way of filling your body with essential vitamins and minerals and flushing those nasties out of your system.
Here are some useful tips to get you started and stay motivated and most importantly, to give you an idea of what to expect. It won’t be easy to give up the fast foods at first, but believe me, your body will thank you for it!
Ease into it
As with any diet change, you’ll stand the greatest chance of success if you’ve planned ahead. So choose a week when you have as few commitments as possible as you may experience some side-effects. Start slowly by first replacing your regular snack between meals with a juice and gradually work up to replacing all your meals with juices. As you do this you’ll start to feel both the ups and downs: your juice will give you a boost of energy but your body will be crying out for your comfort food. Try to stay focused and it if becomes really hard, be gentle on yourself and stay on your current meals for a few days before replacing your next meal with a juice.

As with all things, it’s much harder to pick things up after you’ve fallen off the wagon – so do your best to stay on track!

Stay hydrated
It’s critical to keep yourself hydrated. Ideally, you should drink water shortly after drinking your juice to help it pass through your digestive system quickly. Although the frequent bathroom breaks may be an irritation to start with – keep reminding yourself that your system is being flushed.

No it’s not PMS… again
During your first days of juice cleansing, you may feel irritable and may suffer from some mild headaches. The simplest of things may annoy you more than usual (hence the planning mentioned earlier). This is simply your body’s normal response as toxins are being flushed out. Your body will also be craving all those unhealthy feel-good foods you’ve been eating, and as you stop, you’ll experience something close to withdrawal symptoms. Don’t be afraid and let it put you off. It’s a good sign and means that you’re getting rid of the chemicals in your body bit by bit and replacing them with healthy nourishment.

Variety is the spice of life
Your juicing diet doesn’t have to be bland and boring. Create a colorful variation of juices for each day. Try associating a time of day with a certain color. For example, go for green in the mornings. Try the Loaded mix from Juzcit which contains green apple, cucumber, celery, lettuce, spinach, cos, lime and mint for an energy boost to start your day. Or, if you really need a caffeine kick, grab a Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate with organic coffee, vanilla pods, cardamom and mineralized water.

And as you wind down in the evening, go for the comforting and sumptuous taste of the Active Milk. It contains nutmeg, almonds, cinnamon, medjool dates and purified water to soothe your taste buds and it tastes as good as a liquid dessert!

Juice cleansing is a challenge and it’s not an easy diet to stick to, but keep your mind focused on the end results: you’ll be more energetic, healthier, and as an added bonus you’ll lose some weight too. As a short-term boost, juicing is a great option and as always, remember that the natural way is always the best and most recommended way!
